Cor Unum

What is Cor Unum?

The Pontifical Council Cor Unum was established by Pope Paul VI on July 15, 1971. Desiring this office to be “ecclesial action for aid”, it was his wish that this office of the Holy See express “the care of the Catholic Church for the needy, thereby encouraging human fellowship and making manifest the charity of Christ.” (Apostolic Consitution, Pastor Bonus, n. 145).

What is the
Mission of Cor Unum?

Cor Unum is the response of the Holy Father to the duty of universal charity, (cf. Amoris officio, 1971). As such, it is the practical instrument of the Pope to carry out special initiatives for humanitarian disaster relief and for integral human promotion. There is also the responsibility of fostering the catechesis of charity toward motivating concrete witness to Gospel charity by the faithful. Finally, the office is charged with encouraging and coordinating initiatives by Catholic humanitarian organizations through fraternal cooperation and exchange of information, with an eye to the ecumenical dimension of this interaction.
Putting into Action the Charitable
Intentions of Our Holy Father,
Pope Benedict XVI

Christian charity is first of all the simple response to immediate needs and specific situations: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for and healing the sick, visiting those in prison, etc. The Church’s charitable organizations, beginning with those of Caritas (at diocesan, national and international levels), ought to do everything in their power to provide the resources and above all the personnel needed for this work... human beings always need something more than technically proper care. They need humanity. They need heartfelt concern. Those who work for the Church’s charitable organizations must be distinguished by the fact that they do not merely meet the needs of the moment, but they dedicate themselves to others with heartfelt concern, enabling them to experience the richness of their humanity. Consequently, in addition to their necessary professional training, these charity workers need ‘a formation of the heart’: they need to be led to that encounter with God in Christ which awakens their love and opens their spirits to others. As a result, love of neighbor will no longer by for them a commandment imposed, so to speak, from without, but a consequence deriving from their faith, a faith which becomes active through love (cf. Gal 5:6).

— Pope Benedict XVI
Encyclical Letter,
Deus Caritas est, n. 31a.

What are the
Activities of Cor Unum?

Cor Unum, in practical terms, is charged with realizing the charitable intentions of the Holy Father, and bringing primarily emergency aid to the suffering in his name. The Lenten Message is presented each year by the President of Cor Unum, who also serves as the head of the Pope’s two charitable Foundations, Populorum Progressio and John Paul II for the Sahel. One of the most important activities is the promotion of theological reflection among the Bishop of the Church toward a strengthening of the roots of Christian charity.
